Activity Leader
The Activity Leader is responsible for the development, implementation and supervision of therapeutic activities for elders with dementia or physical impairment. Programs and activities will be designed to maximize the capabilities of participants to improve or maintain their mental and physical status. The Activity Leader will be responsible for training and directing staff and volunteers to assist with the activities program. In addition, the Activity Leader will provide hands-on assistance to participants with activities of daily living (e.g., toileting, feeding, walking, transfers).

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
High School diploma or equivalent plus one-year related experience.

- Experience working with cognitively impaired adults
- Ability to work under pressure and exercise good judgment in crisis situations
- Ability to work independently and as a team member
- Ability to maintain patience and a sense of humor in stressful situations
- Experience in recreational therapy a plus
- Excellent communication skills
- Good organizational skills
- Creative in music and the arts a plus
- Ability to work sensitively and collaboratively with volunteers
- Ability to engage people with memory disorders
- Experience with nursing assistance a plus
- Knowledge of Alzheimer’s Disease and related disorders
- CPR Certification
Essential Physical Requirements
- Lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying – must be able to lift, push, pull or carry a minimum of twenty-five (25) pounds and be able to move the weight a distance of five (5) feet.
- Balancing – will need to be able to maintain your balance during participant transfers and/or ambulation.
- Kneeling, crouching, stooping, twisting, reaching below waist level, reaching overhead, reaching torso level – will occur anytime while meeting participant’s personal care needs.
- Visual acuity – will need sufficient eyesight to provide care.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans, implements, supervises and evaluates meaningful, therapeutic individual and group activities that meet the individual goals and needs of participants.
- Directs/delegates responsibilities to staff and volunteers to ensure participant engagement in group and individual activities.
- Helps in the development and implantation of monthly activities calendar.
- Works with participants, their caregivers and staff to identify long range goals for the participant.
- Helps participants in the program orientation process.
- Assists participants with activities of daily living (e.g., feeding, walking, transfers, toileting).
- Completes daily flow sheets documenting participant’s level of activity participation. Assists with other paperwork as necessary.
- Trains and supervises volunteers. Utilizes volunteers with consideration of their individual interests and talents.
- Intervenes therapeutically in crisis situations.
- Identifies and works to correct potential and environmental hazards at, and around, the site.
- Assist with daily infection control cleaning.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
